About the Cheese
Barlocco Blue is a complex and crumbly blue cheese, similar to Hebridean Blue, and made from pasteurised cow’s milk on Scotland’s southwest coast.
Finely veined for a smooth, balanced flavour throughout, it has a semi-firm, crumbly texture and a natural rind.
Named after Barlocco Island near the farm, this bold and full-flavoured blue is best enjoyed complex red or sweet wines and full-flavoured ales or stouts.
Cheesemaker: The Ethical Dairy
Barlocco Blue is made by The Ethical Dairy at Rainton Farm, pioneers of the “cow with calf” system, an alternative, welfare-led approach where calves stay with their mothers for 5–6 months.
This groundbreaking model, rooted in respect for animals, land, and people, has reduced antibiotic use by 90%, halved energy consumption, and increased biodiversity fivefold.
As one of the UK’s most progressive sustainable dairies, The Ethical Dairy combines traditional cheesemaking with genuine environmental and ethical integrity, producing cheese that tastes good and does good.
